Béla Fleck And The Flecktones Were Pure Magic For Capitol Theatre Debut [Full Audio]

first_imgIt was Future Man that hit the nail on the head when he was introducing Béla Fleck, calling the banjoist an absolute master and visionary for wanting to bring the banjo into jazz music. The Flecktones are heady jazz through and through; don’t let Fleck’s bluegrass tones fool you. The band recently reunited for their first shows since 2012, playing a short but sweet two week run on the way to Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Their stop at the Capitol Theatre was a work of beauty, treating fans to an instrumental odyssey that captivated at every turn.At the crux of the Flecktones is incredible musicianship. Aside from the band’s namesake, the band features brothers Victor and Roy Wooten, the latter best known as “Future Man.” Additionally, multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy has made his return to the Flecktones. Levy was a founding member, but left in the 1990’s and was replaced by Jeff Coffin. As Coffin joined the Dave Matthews Band, it was up to Levy to help rekindle the “original” Flecktones magic. Fortunately, the group had a lot to say when they hit the Cap.All four are tremendous musicians, bringing a unique slice to the tight-knit core of the band. Fleck alternated between a traditional and custom electric banjo throughout the night, while Victor Wooten offered some funky tones with his arsenal of basses. Futureman kept the rhythm rocking with an incredibly unique instrument, dubbed a drumitar. Somewhere between a drum machine and a guitar, Futureman would stand up at times and sit down at others, but one hand was always rocking along on that drumitar. Rounding out the ensemble was Levy, who alternated between piano and harmonica primarily, at times peppering the music with juice harp or other percussion tactics. To attempt a description at the music would do it an injustice, because the sheer talents of each member came together to go well beyond the sum of its parts. Together, the four musicians captivated for a full two set performance, keeping fans at the edge of their seats throughout the show. There was a unanimous feeling of reverence from the crowd, as the four awe-inspiring musicians led listeners through an aural journey. Thanks to taper Kevin Antaya, we can listen to the whole show. Tune in below. If you have the chance to see this band live, do not miss it. They are truly masters of their craft, and seeing them perform was a true gift.[Photo by the Capitol Theatre]last_img read more

Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham: Harry Kane goal salvages point for Spurs

first_imgHarry Kane scored a fantastic strike to rescue a point against Liverpool as Tottenham kept in touch with league leaders Leicester. After a mistake-ridden first half, Philippe Coutinho gave the Reds the lead after the break with a well-worked one-two with Daniel Sturridge. However only ten minutes later and Spurs were level as Kane scored his 11th goal in as many games. The result means Tottenham cut Leicester’s lead at the top to four points with the Foxes to play their game in hand against Southampton on Sunday.Liverpool looked like they had blown any outside chance they had of claiming the coveted fourth place last time out against Southampton but started quickly against Tottenham.James Milner had an early chance after good work from Adam Lallana but his shot was well blocked by Kevin Wimmer. However Mamadou Sakho was in a particularly clumsy mood and gifted in-form Harry Kane a great chance to counter attack but he dragged his effort wide of Simon Mignolet’s post.Sturridge, who looked rusty for England in midweek, had a golden opportunity to put the Reds a goal ahead but, despite being in acres of space and one-on-one with Hugo Lloris, he fired straight at the Frenchman’s legs. And Lloris was to thank again when his cat-like reflexes denied Lallana’s turn and volley.Tottenham started the second half the stronger of the two sides but Liverpool struck on the counter in the 51st minute when Coutinho exchanged passes with Sturridge before cushioning it effortlessly into the bottom corner of the net.Spurs nearly hit straight back but Heung-Min Son couldn’t direct his volley on target after Eric Dier’s delightful lofted pass. After 62nd minute Spurs did level and it was a stunning finish from Harry Kane after easily turning Dejan Loven before beating Mignolet for his 22nd Premier League goal of the season. As the game entered the closing moments Coutinho came within inches of snatching victory but his shot flew just wide of the post with Lloris rooted to the spot. The draw means Liverpool remain in ninth place but they continue their record of only losing once to Spurs at Anfield since 1998. Harry Kane becomes the first Tottenham player to score 22 Premier League goals 1last_img read more

Risk Standards Hits Early2000s Levels

first_img June 20, 2017 672 Views Mortgage lenders are taking increased credit risks similar to those of the early 2000s, according to the Q1 Housing Credit Index Report released by CoreLogic on Tuesday. The level of credit risk taken by lenders in Q1 of 2017 was about the same as the average risk taken between 2001 and 2003.According to the report, the shift toward riskier lending standards is a result of declining refinances.“The slight loosening in the credit index during the past year was partly due to a shift in the mix of purchase versus refinance originations because purchase loans exhibit higher risk attributes than refinanced loans,” CoreLogic reported.According to Frank Nothaft, CoreLogic’s Chief Economist, increasing mortgage rates also played a role in the looser lending practices over the last quarter.“Mortgage rates during the first quarter of 2017 were up about 0.5 percentage points from a year earlier,” Nothaft said. “Since 2009, for every one-half percentage point increase in mortgage rates, the average credit score on refinance borrowers has dipped by 9 points, and this pattern will likely continue if mortgage rates move higher. That is because when rates rise, applications drop off and loan officers spend more time with the applicants that have less-than- perfect credit scores, require more documentation or have unique property issues.”CoreLogic’s Housing Credit Index, or HCI, takes into account borrower credit score, loan-to-value and debt-to-income ratios, investor-owned status, condo/co-op share of purchases, and level of documentation. According to the report, credit scores have increased over the year, rising 7 points between Q1 2016 and Q1 2017. Debt-to-income ratios were stable, LTV ratios dropped by 1.7 percent over the year, and investor share of purchase loans inched up just 1 percent.Condo/co-op share rose 2 percentage points over the year—another factor that, according to Nothaft, played a role in the riskier credit standards as of late.“Overall credit risk for purchase loans was slightly higher compared with a year ago as the investor share and condo/co-op share increased,” Nothaft said. “These increases offset lower-risk signals from the credit score, DTI, and LTV attributes to result in an uptick in overall riskiness. Still, overall risk is similar to that of the early 2000s.”The HCI came in at 105.6 for the quarter; the average between 2001 and 2003 was 105.9 The 2001 to 2003 period is considered the “normal baseline for credit risk,” according to CoreLogic’s methodology.
