Harry was a member of Donegal County Council from 1957 to 1999 and a member of Dáil Éireann from 1997 to 2002. He was chairman of Donegal County Council on two occasions from 1967 to 1968 and 1986 to 1987.“Harry Blaney always believed in sharing power and he played an important role in establishing an arrangement for the lifetime of the Council with the whips of the other parties thus ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the Council. “Harry was recognised as one of the great political campaigners during local, general, bye-election and European elections. Harry was known as a tough but fair opponent.
