MS Dhoni refuses to play Vijay Hazare quarterfinals. Chief selector red-faced

first_imgMahendra Singh Dhoni has refused to play Jharkhand’s Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-finals against Maharashtra despite the national selection committee chairman MSK Prasad’s public announcement of him playing the game.Dhoni, who has been in poor form for India over the last couple of months, was expected to play the game at the M. Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru but Jharkhand coach Rajiv Kumar told reporters that MSD has declined to play the game because he feels it is unfair to join the team and affect the team balance.”Dhoni feels that it would not be fair for him to join us at this stage, given that the team has done so well and reached the quarter-final stage in his absence. He does not want to upset the team balance,” Jharkhand coach Kumar said.”He has to go to Hyderabad on October 16 to report for the ODI series. Maybe he will come for a day, I don’t know yet what his plan is, but so far, he is not coming. But it may be possible. You know he takes his own decisions. He is saying the boys are doing well, so there is no point coming for just one game and taking somebody’s place,” he added. The comments are a complete contrast to what Prasad had said a week ago.Last Thursday, Prasad was asked about whether Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu will be playing the Vijay Hazare quarters, he replied: “Dhoni is playing the knock-outs. About Rayudu, I will check and get back.”advertisementJharkhand topped the group league stage with 32 points and Shahbaz Nadeem’s was their notable performer with a List A world record haul of 8 for 10.Dhoni had a great Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings but has struggled for the national team. He has played 22 days of international cricket this year (15 ODIs, 7 T20Is) and has looked out of sorts as a batsman, whenever he has come after a long break. Also read – MS Dhoni should play domestic cricket, feels Sunil GavaskarFollowing Dhoni’s poor form, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had also expressed his concern and said that Dhoni should play domestic cricket to get back in form.”Absolutely (when asked if Dhoni should feature in domestic cricket). Dhoni should be playing domestic cricket and should be playing the four-day games as well because he will help so many of the emerging players from Jharkhand.”I know he travels with the team (Jharkhand), he acts as their mentor but to actually have him playing with them is a great inspiration. He will be a great inspiration to the younger players in the team,” Gavaskar told India Today. With Dhoni’s refusal, there are now questions being raised whether Prasad had even consulted Dhoni in first place before making a public announcement.”I would love to know how MSK Prasad gets in touch with Dhoni,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on Saturday. “Last heard, even VVS Laxman didn’t get a chance to speak to Dhoni before announcing his retirement. Hope he is telling the truth,” he laughed off.(With inputs from PTI)last_img
