World Cup 2019: I would pick India to go all the way, says Mithali Raj

first_imgTwo years back India suffered heartbreak in a closely contested World Cup final against hosts England at Lords. It was the women in blue then who narrowly missed out on being world beaters. If the semi-final results go as per recent form and standings, Virat Kohli’s men could have a crack on July 14 to avenge that loss at the same venue. What does Indian women’s ODI captain Mithali Raj who was at the receiving end in that final think of the prospect? “I had thought at the beginning of the tournament about an India-England final. Because England’s run up to the World Cup was exceptional. Now we can add Australia to the list. My pick would be for India to go all the way. There is no two ways about it. Final could be either India-Australia or India-England,” Mithali tells India Today. The leading batswoman is convinced Virat Kohli’s India is much better placed to overcome the Kiwi challenge in the semi-final as opposed to the resistance England have would have put up. “I know toss is not in our hands but England is a completely different side when they bat first as opposed to when they chase. New Zealand can surprise you too but definitely India will be happier facing New Zealand,” she says.India’s leading lights with bat and ball Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah hold the key. While Rohit is topping the run scoring charts, Bumrah doesn’t feature in the top 10 wicket takers yet. But Mithali agrees, the opposition would know the Bumrah-threat goes beyond the numbers.advertisement”Getting wickets is not the only criteria you can define the best bowler by. It’s important that the bowler gets wickets at times when the team relies upon him. Consistently keeping the opposition under the radar is very important and that is what he has been doing. Even though he is not amongst the highest wicket-takers list in the World Cup, I think he is one of the most dangerous bowlers that the opposition keeps an eye on when facing India,” she opines.Mithali is all praise for Rohit Sharma’s penchant for scoring tons by absorbing big tournament pressure. “Rohit definitely has come into that patch that every cricketer would love to be in. It’s quite remarkable the consistency with which he has scored his hundreds. Very few players are able to perform like that at the biggest stage,” she observes.ALSO READ | India will be world champions if Rohit Sharma fires in next two games: Sunil GavaskarALSO READ | India vs New Zealand, World Cup 2019 semi-final Live Cricket Streaming: Watch IND v NZ Star Sports, DD SportsALSO WATCH | Getting Williamson, Taylor out early will be key for us: Virat Kohlilast_img
