After choosing the grass of Calcutta South Club, India had given themselves the best chance against hard court and clay lovers Italy but India’s weakness in singles bit them once again.India’s top singles player Prajnesh was up against Italy’s most experienced player Seppi but the Italian proved to be just too good for the Indian. Prajnesh struggled to hold his serve against Seppi with the Italian’s quality turning out to way too much for Prajnesh to handle.With Prajnesh’s 1-6, 4-6 loss, India lost the tie and Ramkumar Ramanathan’s final singles rubber was not even played. Mahesh Bhupathi, India’s non-playing captain, will also have his future hanging in balance.Prajnesh was on the backfoot right from the start when he failed to hold his serve in only the second game of the match. Prajnesh made a number of unforced errors and was unable to absorb the pressure from Seppi.advertisementSeppi stayed on top of the set throughout and broke Prajnesh twice in the first set to take it 6-1.Apart from Seppi’s experience and quality, it was Prajnesh’s choice of shots as well that let him down. He missed many a chances against Seppi and that was always going to be a problem.Prajnesh raised his game a bit in the second set trying to pile some pressure on Seppi but the Italian soon upped the ante and after a three break points, he broke Prajnesh again in the third game to go 2-1 up in the second set.From there on, Seppi just held his serve and while Prajnesh fought hard to hold his serve, he need a break and one that he could not get.Eventually, Seppi took the second set 6-4 and won the tie for Italy.On Day 1 of the Davis Cup tie, Prajnesh had lost to Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 3-6 while Ramkumar Ramanathan had fallen 4-6, 2-6 to Seppi as Italy took the honours.The only bright spark for India in the tie was again was their doubles.
