Fit-again Groves eyes Wembley fight

first_imgGeorge Groves plans to fight at Wembley Arena on 14 September – seven weeks after the Hammersmith man’s clash with Francisco Sierra in California. The undefeated British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion will fly out to the United States next week for his first outing since a second-round demolition of Paul Smith last November. This year Groves, 24, has had to withdraw from a defence of his titles against Kenny Anderson and a world title challenge against WBO champion Robert Steiglitz because of a back and nose injury respectively. The intention is for him to dispatch Sierra and then top the bill at Wembley – probably against Anderson, although his opponent has yet to be confirmed.A rematch with Anderson has been eagerly anticipated since he floored Groves before the Londoner battled back to stop him in a thrilling encounter in 2010.“It’s been a frustrating year for me. I’ve had a few injuries and obviously haven’t been as active as I wanted to be,” said Groves.“I’m concentrating fully on my fight next weekend. It’s always a challenge, boxing abroad. I’ll be in with a good guy – he’s a very good fighter, Sierra, with a very good record, so I can’t look past him.“But it’s good to know that when I do beat him, I’ve got a nice big show in London to come back to.“Building a fan base in London has always been important for me. I’m looking forward to some exciting times ahead.”Harrow Weald prospect Mitchell Smith, hugely impressive in his first two professional fights, will also be on the Wembley bill.Promoter Frank Warren says the show is part of his commitment to propelling Groves towards a world title shot – and to staging more boxing in London.“It’s a London card and I want to see big boxing back in town,” Warren declared.“We had a fantastic night with David Haye and it shows that the fans in London come out for the big shows.“We feel there’s a big audience there that’s been neglected for a while, probably because there have been big fights taking place in Manchester and Liverpool.“Wembley’s a fabulous boxing arena with a lot of history and is not far from where George lives.“The objective for me is to build up big fights headed by George. I’m determined to get behind George and really push him.“He’s had a little bit of bad luck with his injuries, but now he’s back in the game I’m going to throw the whole weight of my promotions behind him to get him that world title shot.”Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Lavva: A New Attempt at “Social Search”

first_imgRelated Posts While this in and of itself isn’t entirely crazy (or entirely useful for that matter), how they want you to interact with the content sort of is. News stories have a “go social” link next to them which takes you to another page where you can chat, debate, and discuss the topic with other online searchers. After clicking through a number of these links, it was clear that no one was using this feature. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Product Reviews#search#web In a similar vein, users can sign into Lavva and click on the comment bubble icon under search results to leave their comments on the news story. Remember when Google tried this? Yeah, it was universally disliked then too. Frankly, this just isn’t how people want to interact with search. And if Google couldn’t make voting and commenting on search work, what hope does Lavva have?Future Plans: Twitter and FacebookWhile Lavva’s service may get a little more interesting when they release their next update which plans to incorporate search results from sites like Twitter and Facebook, we doubt that alone will be enough for Lavva to make any impact. Even a startup as promising and innovative as the social search service that was Delver didn’t make it, eventually selling out to Sears (yes, Sears!) in the end. For now the best thing that can be said about Lavva is that it’s powered by hydroelectricity, making it one of the greenest engines around. They plan to move to a solar-based system in the future, reports Seattle tech blog TechFlash. While we’re happy that they’re concerned about the environment, going green isn’t going to be enough to make this social search attempt work. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… After seeing how hard it is to combat the goliath that is Google when it comes to search, you almost have to wonder about anyone launching an alternative search engine these days. Are they crazy? Overly ambitious? Probably a little of both. The latest attempt to snag a little search market share comes from Lavva, a company with big ideas about social search. Instead of retrieving sites based on a search algorithm like Google does, Lavva bases its search results on what people say are the top results. According to the company, this makes search “100% democratic.” After a few test searches of our own, we can only say this: there’s a reason why Google is king. Algorithms work. The “Social Algorithm”In theory, the idealism which infuses Lavva sounds like a good idea. “Search powered by the people,” “results based on quality, not SEO,” “transparency,” etc. are the types of things Lavva likes to rave about when discussing their social algorithm. In practice, however, social search like this doesn’t work. Obviously, it doesn’t help Lavva’s case that very few people know their startup even exists. Without users to rank the results, there’s just no way Lavva can highlight the quality content. sarah perez Their idea just misses the mark, unfortunately. They would probably have had better luck if they overlaid their social algorithm on top of Google results, for example. That way the most relevant links would be retrieved first and then users could rank the results based on quality. (Rankings are done using little thumbs up and thumbs down icons beneath each result). Do You Want to Chat about the News in Your Search Engine?Another one of Lavva’s hair-brained schemes is their “News Goes Social” page. Here, the engine aggregates top stories from a select few resources (CNN, Reuters, BBC, UN News, AP) and combines those with top search terms and the top links on Twitter. Office Apps Are Coming, Microsoft Says, Just Be Patient

first_imgIT + Project Management: A Love Affair Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Related Posts markhachmancenter_img Microsoft’s Office Store still feels more like Goodwill than a Target – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, according to Microsoft. If you think there are too few apps in the Office App Store, a Microsoft executive begs to differ. And as Microsoft moves closer to Office 2013’s business launch on Feb. 27, the company expects more apps to be added both by the company itself as well as third-party developers.Following the consumer launch of Office 2013 in January, the App Store’s cupboard might have been considered somewhat bare. In total, there are about 200 apps within the Office Store, according to Richard Riley, a director at Microsoft, whose responsibilities include both SharePoint as well as the Office App Store.Riley won’t commit to a number of apps that would be added to the Office App Store, but he promises that there will be “much more than the 200” that are there now. “In terms of momentum and as we go through, I think in the next six months or so we’ll see that momentum pick up and carry forward,” Riley says. “I don’t feel bad where we are. I really don’t.”(See also Microsoft: Buy Office 365, Not Office 2012. Or You’ll Get Left Behind)Last July, Microsoft outlined the development model for Office 2013, the current version of Office  – a subscription version, known as Office 365, is also available. Both Office 2013 and Office 365 replaced the familiar Microsoft Basic for Applications with a Web-based language model that essentially takes an XML file and combines it with a Web app, using familiar Web languages like CSS, HTM, and JavaScript. Since the app runs outside of Office, if it breaks, only it crashes – not Office. While the reliance on Web languages might have made a bit difficult for traditional Office developers, the approach theoretically opened up Office to a vast number of Web developers who may have never developed for Office before.Microsoft’s Attempts To Jumpstart Office App Development“Historically, if you wanted to build something for Office, like if you wanted to build an an add-in for Word, you would have to have all of the Visual Studio add-ins for that have to understand C++, have to understand .NET wrapper code – there was a learning curve there,” Riley says. “Like most developers these days, if it was different; you had to go spend time and figure out how to use it. That barrier no longer exists. If you understand how to write for the cloud app model, if you understand how to write Javascript and HTML, you understand REST, you can pretty much get started immediately without having to go wade through a big reference book and how to get going.” Riley says Microsoft has been bringing existing Office developers, as well as developers new to the platform, into “jumpstart events,” where the company puts dives deep into the technology. Afterward, the developers go away, develop, and then return for an “acceleration day,” where those developers receive assistance to push those apps into the store.“We can now credibly talk to a ton of new developers that historically would have ignored us,” Riley says. “And actually go to them with a very credible technology story, but also a really significant market opportunity… when you look at all of the Office and SharePoint licenses in existence today, there is an opportunity for a developer to make a difference, to make a ton of money off of the back of the Office or Sharepoint store.”Riley said that he considers Microsoft to essentially be in the middle of the Office launch, where the consumer edition was released first and then businesses will be encouraged to sign on at the end of the month. “We haven’t finished launching from an app perspective,” he says.It might be reasonable to think that Microsoft would have launched the App Store with a number of launch partners, big-name software developers whose products would instantly have added cachet to Microsoft’s rollout. Riley doesn’t agree. No-Name Apps Are OK“I think it depends on how you look at it,” Riley explains. “You don’t need big names to add value to a product. Would no-name graphics capability that you could get for free from the App Store, to make your Excel spreadsheet sing, and get a pat on the back from your boss, be more useful than a big-brand-name thing that wouldn’t get you the same result? So we have the quality here, and in my experience, we don’t need a laundry list of famous icons.”Fair enough. Unfortunately, when asked to highlight some of the “no-name” apps that could make Office “sing,” Riley turns back toward the Bing apps that Microsoft had launched previously. The hope of Microsoft’s Office 2013 model is that it can combine live data sources from the Web into Office documents, such as combining sales data from a customer relationship management database with the Bing maps web service to create a more effective sales report. Riley promises that here will be a growing number of apps within Excel that help users visualize data. And there are hopeful signs: the Microsoft Oscar plugin for Excel, an Olympics medal tracker, an ESPN fantasy-football app. Riley also makes the point that corporations will write and publish their own internal apps that general Office users will never see.Still, Microsoft needs more. When asked, for example, if there is any app that could take advantage of the datasets hosted by the U.S. government on data.gov, Riley replies that isn’t aware of any. He then adds he would make a note to see what would be needed to make those sources available.Of course, there’s a larger question: For all of its reach, is Microsoft’s Office simply too small a platform for those developers used to the huge installed base of iOS, Android and all of the other Web platforms? For a small app developer like Gliffy, no. Others may not see it that way, though. Opening Office to the Web allows more developers to enter Office. Only time will tell if they see it as a lucratie marketplace, or as a closet. Tags:#apps#Excel#Microsoft#Microsoft Office Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo…last_img read more

Be Your Own Hero

first_imgAt a Toastmasters meeting, I was given two minutes to give an extemporaneous answer to the questions: “Who is your hero? And why are they your hero?” Without skipping a beat and without delay, I answered: “I am my own hero.” It sounds arrogant, I know. But before you judge the response, bear with me long enough that I can share with you the explanation that I gave the group I was speaking to. See if you don’t agree with me that you must be your own hero. You Have Only One StoryYou have only one story, for good or for ill. You are the producer, director, writer, and lead actor in only one story: your own. You are writing this story now, and you get decide, chapter by chapter, and frame by frame, just how that story goes. You get to decide whether your story is the tale of a passionate adventurer who is living their life and making big choices that make it something special. You also decide whether your story is one of a person leading “a life of quiet desperation,” wishing that things were different, but never taking the heroic action that would make that difference.Since you only get one story, you must choose to be the hero.If you don’t like the way the story is going, scrap it and call for a rewrite. Start it over right where you are. The best stories always have an arc in which the character overcomes their present circumstances to be something more by doing something spectacular. If your leading man (or lady) isn’t the passionate, romantic love interest that would make your story worth living, fire him (or her), and recast the part with someone else.If the great adventure in your story is simply making it to your cubicle day after day, scrap it and write the story of someone who breaks the bonds of indentured servitude and does something daring and remarkable instead. Make it the story of someone who brings so much passion to what they do that it changes everything. Forever.Lest you believe that this is arrogant or selfish, let me challenge you to write another story. How about the story of someone who helps to massively improve the lives of others, someone who touches lives in a way that inspires them to be more than they would otherwise be?Heroes always fight for causes greater than themselves, don’t they. What are you fighting for? When the Curtain FallsMost people have too small of a vision of themselves, and their lives are far less than they could be. They let the tiny voice that lives inside them drown out the voice of the hero. The go along silently, never allowing the hero inside of them to break free. There is no reason to go looking for heroes or heroines. When the curtain falls, when your story is over, you will have had your single opportunity to be whatever it was that you might have been.Don’t miss that opportunity. Don’t sit on the sidelines as a dispassionate observer of your story allowing others to write it for you. Write your own story, and be your own hero.last_img read more

Delhis waste chokes Yamuna of all aquatic life

first_imgIt is not that Yamuna river has no aquatic life at all. Upstream from Wazirabad – before the river enters Delhi – it is home to turtles, different species of fish, crocodiles and an abundance of aquatic plants and phytoplankton. But as it enters Delhi, the river starts to die. Noted ecologist CR Babu, who is helping the Delhi government in developing a riverfront for the Yamuna, says that the river is in fact “ecologically dead” in the 22 km urban stretch – between the Wazirabad and Okhla barrages. “Low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) and a very high degree of pollution are the reasons that killed the river,” said Babu. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfA retired Delhi University professor, Babu says that sewage from 21 nullahs (drains) flow into the river, polluting it to a level that is enough to kill the components essential for maintaining aquatic life. Agents like phytoplankton are responsible for sustaining the aquatic food web by creating organic compounds from carbon dioxide dissolved in the water. In the urban stretch of Yamuna there are no phytoplankton or zooplankton left; these play an important role in maintaining the aquatic life of any water body. They have vanished,” he said. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveExperts say factors like river-basin degradation, ecological pollution, contaminant effect on ecosystem and ecology, solid and liquid waste pollution and encroachment on riverbed have all combined to kill Yamuna’s aquatic life. The river, which normally flows through the city in the form of a big ‘nullah’ with no water life, is these days flooded because of heavy monsoon rains which may temporarily revive some aquatic life. According to a report of the Central Pollution Control Board, the current level of DO in the river is only around 1 mg/litre, while it should be between 4 to 5 mg/litre to sustain life. “The formation of coliform bacteria is very high due to pollution. It is formed from raw sewage, and the Delhi stretch of Yamuna is no different than a sewer drain. This is a major factor discouraging aquatic life in the river,” said Sushmita Sengupta, Deputy Water Programme Manager at the Centre for Science and Environment. Ammonia levels, which should to be at a maximum level of 1.2 mg/l, also shoot up to 12 mg/l at some points in the city. Research biologist Chaitra Baliga, who has worked extensively on turtles in various parts of the country, says that other than in Delhi, the Yamuna contains rich aquatic life. Besides different species of fish, crocodiles, turtles and mugger crocodiles, even fresh water Gangetic dolphins can be found in some stretches of the river near Hamirpur, in Uttar Pradesh. “Fresh water during the monsoon may dilute some of the river’s pollutants, but that will not have any sustainable effect on aquatic life,” said Baliga, adding that river-bed construction and human interference are equally responsible for the ecological imbalance in the river. Delhi Water Minister, Kapil Mishra said the government was working seriously to clean the river and bring the Yamuna back to life. “The construction of 14 STPs is going on and we will complete it by December 2017. It is our primary focus that after the STPs are made functional, untreated water will not be allowed into the river,” said Mishra.last_img read more

Amazon Wants a Hit Series of Its Own
