9 April 2015Bafana Bafana have been drawn against Cameroon, Gambia and Mauritania in Group M of the 2017 Orange Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The tournament will be held in Gabon after a decision by the CAF Congress that saw the Central African country beat Ghana and Algeria to the vote to host the 31st Edition of CAF’s premier event. War-torn Libya was initially selected to host Afcon, but concerns over players and spectators’ safety pushed CAF to choose an alternative host.Bafana Bafana were among 52 countries that went into the hat at the draw in Cairo on Wednesday. Only the group winner will progress to the Afcon finals, which will include the two best-placed runners-up and the host nation. The first round of qualifying fixtures will take place from 8 to 16 June.Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba said he was happy with the draw, but warned that it would not be a walk in the park.“Some may see this as a relatively easy group. On paper it is, but on the field it is a different story altogether. I have said before that there are no easy matches in international football anymore. Football has changed and every country will give it a go,” he said.“While we may know much about Cameroon, not much is said about Gambia and Mauritania, and those could be our banana peels. We have to do what we did during the 2015 qualifiers – be brave, show no respect, but, above all, prepare thoroughly and take nothing for granted,” he added.“I am very happy with the draw and closer to the time we will reveal our plans as to how we will tackle the qualifiers. We did well in the 2015 qualifiers but that is all in the past and the important thing is maintain the standard we set by qualifying outright.”South Africa is ranked 55 on the Fifa World Rankings, Cameroon is 49 (10 on the continent), Mauritius is 190 (51 on the continent) and Gambia is 168 (46 on the continent).Bafana Bafana will open their 2017 Afcon qualifying account against Gambia at home on the weekend of 12, 13, 14 June this year.In the last qualifier, South Africa will host Mauritania on the weekend of 2, 3, 4 September 2016.South Africa’s 2017 Afcon fixturesSouth Africa vs Gambia (12,13,14 June 2015)Mauritania vs South Africa (4, 5, 6 September 2015)Cameroon vs South Africa (23, 24, 25, 26 March 2016)South Africa vs Cameroon (26, 27, 28, 29 March 2016)Gambia vs South Africa (3, 4, 5 June 2016)South Africa vs Mauritania (2, 3, 4 September 2016)Afcon 2017 – the full drawGroup A: Tunisia, Togo, Liberia, DjiboutiGroup B: Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Central Africa Republic, MadagascarGroup C: Mali, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, South SudanGroup D: Burkina Faso, Uganda, Botswana, ComorosGroup E: Zambia, Congo, Kenya, Guinea BissauGroup F: Cape Verde, Morocco, Libya, Sao TomeGroup G: Nigeria, Egypt, Tanzania, ChadGroup H: Ghana, Mozambique, Rwanda, MauritiusGroup I: Cote d’Ivoire, Sudan, Sierra Leone, GabonGroup J: Algeria, Ethiopia, Lesotho, SeychellesGroup K: Senegal, Niger, Namibia, BurundiGroup L: Guinea, Malawi, Zimbabwe, SwazilandGroup M: Cameroon, South Africa, Gambia, MauritaniaSource: South African Football Association
18 June 2015By the end of 2014, South Africa had spent R1-trillion on developing its infrastructure.“The expenditure was in areas such as energy, water infrastructure, sanitation, rail, road-based public transport, and hospital revitalisation, among others,” said Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.Speaking on Wednesday during the Vision 2030 Summit, Radebe highlighted the work that was under way as part of implementing the National Development Plan (NDP) specifically in infrastructure development. The NDP is aimed at eliminating poverty and inequality by 2030.He said investments in infrastructure would expand South Africa’s economic opportunities.Investments in the energy sector, he told delegates, included the construction of Medupi and Kusile power stations and Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme.“South Africa has enabled significant investment in the renewable energy sector totalling some R168-billion in the four bidding windows announced to date,” he said, referring to the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.South Africa was regarded as a global leader in renewable energy, having approved 79 independent power producer projects totalling 5 243 megawatts.Last year, Transnet announced a R50-billion investment to manufacture more than 1 000 locomotives.“The plan is that all locomotives except for the first 70 will be manufactured in South Africa and delivered by 2019. This will significantly expand Transnet’s general freight capacity to support economic activity as well as expand the country’s industrial capacity.”In 2012, Transnet Freight Rail announced the expansion of the Sishen iron ore line for R28.6-billion. The project was under way.In addition, R7-billion had been earmarked for investment in the country’s ports by Transnet Ports Authority as part of Operation Phakisa, which is aimed at unlocking the economic potential of the its oceans.“A further commitment of R9.2-billion of public and private investment for the construction of a new berth in Saldana Bay, the extension of the Mossgas Quay and the refurbishment of the Offshore Supply Base has also been made,” Radebe said. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) had awarded a tender for new rail rolling stock estimated to cost R51-billion. Prasa would spend R4-billion on new hybrid locomotives over 10 years. “A rail passenger factory will be established in Nigel, Ekurhuleni for the manufacture and assembly of locomotives and trains. It is expected that over 65 000 direct and indirect jobs will be created.”An upgrade of the Moloto Road was also recently announced, costing R1.1-billion, to improve safety and mobility on this road. The notoriously dangerous road, the R573, links Tshwane with Mpumalanga and Limpopo. In other expenditure, South Africa would spend R13-billion on the Research, Development and Support Programme through the Department of Science and Technology. The department would also make transfers to the National Research Foundation of R2.7-billion to support 4 539 researchers, 15 918 Masters students and 9 615 doctoral students.“It is important that we understand that initiatives by [the] government are not undertaken in isolation and form part of a broader mandate to expand economic opportunities and improve the lives of our people,” Radebe said.Source: SAnews.gov
Stepping up its campaign on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Congress on Sunday alleged that the Modi government had tried to delay the process by arguing before the Supreme Court that the NRC could lead to law-and-order issues. The Congress also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as the BJP tried to “mislead” the people of Assam.Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera told presspersons that on November 30, the Attorney-General argued before the top court that the publication of the NRC could lead to violence and create a law-and-order problem.“On November 30, 2017, the Supreme Court came down heavily on the Modi government for its excuses to delay the NRC in Assam. The Attorney-General gave the excuse of fear of violence,” Mr. Khera said and pointed out that the court reprimanded the government.“We do not see how the aforesaid situation can even remotely arise as we have already indicated in the earlier part of the present order that claims of 47 lakh persons (regarding whom the doubt pertained to parental linkage) and 29 lakh persons (married women who had submitted gram panchayat secretary certificates) are still pending and would be subject to verification and covered by publication of another draft NRC at a subsequent point of time,” Mr. Khera said quoting the SC.The Congress has stepped up its campaign after BJP president Amit Shah said in Parliament that it was the BJP government that had shown the “courage” to implement it.The Congress counter has been that the NRC update was the outcome of the 1985 Assam Accord, signed by the Rajiv Gandhi govenment, and was started by a Congress government in the State. On Monday, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be addressing a press conference in Delhi on the NRC issue.“The Shah of lies and the Shahenshah of Jumlas tried their best to stall NRC. I will tell you how they hatched a conspiracy to stop, delay and disrupt the NRC process,” Mr. Khera said.“We demand that the Modi government apologise to the people of Assam for attempting to stall the NRC … We also demand the resignation of the so-called Jan Nayak Shri Sarbanand Sonowal who has no right to be the Chief Minister of a State that his party so shamelessly cheated in the Supreme Court on the issue of NRC,” he said.

London: Raheem Sterling has been dropped by England manager Gareth Southgate for Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro after the hostilities between Manchester City and Liverpool spilled over into the England camp.Liverpool beat Sterling’s City 3-1 on Sunday to move nine points clear of the defending Premier League champions at the top of the table. The Daily Mail reported that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Sterling had to be separated by teammates on Monday after a “physical confrontation.”The pair had also clashed on the field towards the end of Sunday’s match. In a statement issued by the Football Association, Southgate said: “We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday.”One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we’ve been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately, the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw.”My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken. Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it’s important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night.”Sterling has been one of the stars of England’s qualification campaign, scoring eight goals in six games.A draw against Montenegro at Wembley will be enough to guarantee England’s place at Euro 2020.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Mo’ne Davis didn’t have her best stuff when she and her Philadelphia teammates needed it most, and Las Vegas took advantage.Dallan Cave and Brennan Holligan hit two-run homers, lefty reliever Austin Kryszczuk got out of two big jams, and Las Vegas beat Philadelphia and its star pitcher 8-1 in the Little League World Series on Aug. 20.Davis, just the 18th girl to play in the Little League World Series and the only one to win a game on the mound, took the loss.“Mo’ne didn’t have her A game today,” Philly Manager Alex Rice said. “At this point, we’re playing to get to Saturday.”The victory puts Las Vegas in the Aug. 23 U.S. title game and sends Philadelphia into an elimination game on Aug. 20 against Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West in a matchup of inner-city teams. The Great Lakes champion beat Pearland, Texas 6-1 on Aug. 19 night in an elimination game.“I think it’s terrific,” Rice said. “I’ve been looking forward to playing Chicago since we got here.”Davis, the darling of the sports world with her amazing success and poise, was both masterful and ordinary on a night made short because of pitch-count rules. She allowed three runs and six hits and struck out six in 2 1-3 innings before leaving after 55 pitches. That makes her eligible to pitch again in the U.S. championship game on Aug. 23.Davis played first after her stint on the mound and was switched to right field in the top of the sixth, but she dazzled her opponents more than once on the mound with off-speed deliveries and tantalizing pitches just off the plate.“She’s very crafty,” said Kryszczuk, who picked up the victory. “She’s a great pitcher. That triple in the first was huge and then she settled down. Great job by us to get this victory.”The grassy hill beyond the outfield fences at Howard J. Lamade Stadium was jammed with so many cheering fans in lawn chairs that it looked like the bleacher section at any ballpark as 34,128 fans craned to see every pitch. And they had an effect on Las Vegas, an afterthought at best to many before the game.“The crowd got to us at times. It was hard to communicate,” Las Vegas Manager Ashton Cave said. “That’s a big weight to carry on a 13-year-old’s shoulders what goes on publicly. They definitely deserve the attention that they get, but we have the first Nevada team in history in 75 years to make it to this point. To come through and do what we’ve done, we’re just definitely making a mark.”The 5-foot-4 Davis, who has given the Taney Youth Baseball Association Little League in Philadelphia notoriety no one could have imagined, tries to use the first two innings to get to know the home plate umpire’s strike zone, and the first time through the order gauges where the opposing players don’t like the ball.It worked like a charm in her first outing in the World Series as she pitched a two-hit shutout. She didn’t get that chance on this night against hard-hitting Las Vegas, which had outscored its first two opponents 25-4.Davis, her long braids flopping over her shoulders on every pitch, allowed hits to the first two batters as Philadelphia fell behind. Leadoff hitter Zach Hare lofted a soft single to center and Kryszczuk followed with a resounding triple to right center for a 1-0 lead.Unfazed, Davis struck out the side, getting Holligan looking and Brad Stone and Andrew Matulich swinging.Philadelphia threatened in the bottom of the first, but Las Vegas right fielder Alex Barker made a dazzling diving catch at the warning track of a drive by Jack Rice to end the inning and strand two Philly runners.“It was amazing,” said Stone, who found out he was starting in warmups. After reaching back for something extra to get out of that first-inning jam, Davis sputtered again. Cave slammed a two-run shot to left-center, a liner that just cleared the fence for a 3-0 lead.Josiah Cromwick and Hare followed with singles, but Davis settled down again and struck out Kryszczuk swinging and Holligan looking again. She left in the top of the third in favor of lefty Erik Lipson, but she wasn’t through competing. After falling behind 0-2 in the count in her second at-bat, Davis worked a walk with runners at second and third and Zion Spearman scored when the fourth ball bounded away from the catcher. When Tai Shanahan followed with a perfect bunt single in front of the plate, the Philadelphia fans began chanting “Let’s go Taney! Let’s go Taney!”But Kryszczuk came on in relief and Las Vegas escaped. He got Lipson looking at a third strike and Eli Simon lined into a double play to end the threat. In the fifth, Kryszczuk struck out Spearman swinging with two runners on.Las Vegas tacked on five runs in the top of the sixth, keyed by an RBI double by Hare and Holligan’s homer.Las Vegas entered the game on a serious roll. The Mountain Ridge Little League champions beat Rapid City, South Dakota 12-2 and then routed Chicago 13-2 in four innings in a mercy-rule game on Aug. 17 behind five homers, a grand slam by Stone and two from Kryszczuk.Davis began her eye-opening appearance in the showcase event by throwing a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over Nashville. She had eight strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter and needed only 70 pitches to complete the game.Davis also threw a three-hit shutout to lead Taney to an 8-0 victory over Delaware in the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship game, so she has a flair for the dramatic. The glare of the spotlight on Davis and her teammates only grew as newly elected Major League Baseball Commissioner-elect Rob Manfred threw the ceremonial first pitch a day after Davis became the first Little Leaguer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.“Last week, this week, maybe next week, she’s owned the sports conversation,” Sports Illustrated Managing Editor Chris Stone said. “How often do you get to say this about a 13-year-old girl? It’s the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story.”(JOHN KEKIS, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares
Sassuolo 1 Juventus 3: Dybala marks 100th appearance with stunning hat-trick Joe Wright Last updated 2 years ago 20:25 17/9/2017 Getty Images Three goals from Paulo Dybala gave Juventus a 3-1 win at Sassuolo and took them back to the top of Serie A. Paulo Dybala marked his 100th Juventus appearance with a sensational hat-trick as the Serie A champions claimed a 3-1 win at Sassuolo. The Argentina international produced a superb performance at MAPEI Stadium on Sunday to inspire his side to a fourth victory in four league games and return to the top of the table.Sassuolo had not lost at home since April but their chances of springing a surprise were dealt a blow just 16 minutes in, as Dybala brilliantly swept home his 50th goal for the club. Alien. #SassuoloJuve— OptaPaolo (@OptaPaolo) September 17, 2017Andrea Consigli was twice called upon to keep out Juve in the first 10 minutes, making a flying save to his right to deny Miralem Pjanic before reacting superbly to block Gonzalo Higuain’s volley from close range. But Consigli was powerless to stop Dybala putting the visitors ahead in the 16th minute. Fit-again forward Mario Mandzukic sent a low pass into Dybala’s path and the Argentina star swept a curled first-time strike into the bottom-right corner from 20 yards out.Sassuolo looked bright going forward, with Politano testing Gianluigi Buffon, but they looked exposed to the Juve counter-attack and a better finish from Higuain after Dybala and Cuadrado combined would have made it 2-0 before the break. The home side finished the half in encouraging fashion but, four minutes after the restart, they were undone by more Dybala brilliance.Cuadrado fed the forward just inside the penalty area and, when it looked as though he had no route to goal, he produced an impudent toe-poke finish into the bottom-right corner. The visiting fans were in full voice but Sassuolo hit back two minutes later, Politano converting from point-blank range after Adjapong had prodded the ball beyond Buffon at the keeper’s right-hand post and forced Chiellini to cover on the line. The resistance was short-lived, though. Having earned a free-kick 20 yards out, Dybala stepped up and whipped a fine finish past Consigli to complete his hat-trick just past the hour mark. When @PauDybala_JR wears the it’s always a hat-trick! #FinoAllaFine #SassuoloJuve pic.twitter.com/r5KMGllkif— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) September 17, 2017Blaise Matuidi went close with a volley and Cuadrado saw a late chance for a fourth deflected over, but the day belonged to Dybala, who was replaced to a standing ovation in the closing minutes after taking his tally for the season to 10 goals in six appearances in all competitions.
